Four Christmases and a Wedding

When event planner Chloe is hired to plan the local Christmas Festival, she is beyond thrilled to embrace the challenge. Professionally, everything is going great, but much to the dismay of her mother, Chloe confesses she has given up on ever finding Mr. Right. That all changes the night of the opening of the festival when she meets Evan. The two begin a whirlwind romance, but as Christmas Day nears, Chloe learns that Evan is being transferred overseas for work. What follows is three more Christmases where Chloe and Evan cross paths at the annual festival, but each year something, or someone, stands in the way of true love. Will a touch of Santa's magic on their fourth Christmas Eve finally bring them together?
Our Two Cents:
Ugh. We hate writing negative reviews, but we gotta be honest... There wasn't much we liked about this. Poorly written. Poorly acted. No chemistry. Lots of large sheets of cotton polyester blankets laid down over fake bushes and sidewalks that we are supposed to believe is snow. We say skip it.

A Very Merry Toy Store

Connie Forrester (Melissa Joan Hart, "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch"), a young single mom, and Will DiNova (Mario Lopez, "Holiday in Handcuffs") each run their small, family-owned toy stores in Connecticut. Similar to their families, Connie and Will have been business rivals for year, until both of their livelihoods fall into jeopardy when the big box toy store "Roy's Toys" has its grand opening right before Christmas. In order to save their businesses, Connie and Will band together to save the stores that have defined their families for generations, and in the process, might just find love in time for Christmas.

Our Two Cents: This was a HUGE disappointment! We generally love Melissa Joan Hart. And her first collaboration with Mario Lopez 10 years ago, Holiday in Handcuffs, was such a ridiculous and AWESOME movie that we had high expectations. This was just awkward and boring and lame. We wish we could list some redeeming qualities about this one, but the commercial with the squeaky dog toys creating the tune of Jingle Bells was more entertaining than this movie.

The Spirit of Christmas

Attorney Kate Jordan is sent to broker the sale of Hollygrove Inn, but she is told that her appraiser has left because of a ghost. Sure enough, it's not long before she meets Daniel Forsythe...a man who mysteriously died 95 years ago. The two strike a deal if she can help him discover the truth behind his death and why he is cursed to return to the inn for Christmas each year, he will leave and allow Kate to finish her job. As they work together, Kate can t help but fall for this dashing Christmas spirit, and a romance develops that will alter the course of both their lives.

Our Two Cents:
A little more of a drama, but it doesn't take it's self too seriously. It still has some comedic moments. too Overall this was a pretty good movie. We like this one especially because it's a bit different from the typical Christmas movies.

Last Chance for Christmas

When Prancer injures his hoof, Santa's stable hand John must find a fill in to ensure Christmas deliveries go off without a hitch. His mission gets complicated when he discovers that Frankie, the perfect substitute reindeer, belongs to a precocious 8-year-old girl and her mother Annie. As he races to get Frankie up to the North Pole, he realizes that he's actually falling in love with Annie and has to find a way to win her over and save Christmas at the same time.

Our Two Cents:
Usually movies with Santa and the North Pole and elves are… well, we don’t typically like them. Santa and Mrs. Claus usually get under our skin. There are exceptions to it, and this is definitely one of those exceptions. Mrs. Claus was sharp and sassy, and we kinda loved her!

We like pretty much all of Hilarie Burton’s Christmas movies. The girl that plays her daughter was adorably precocious. And John’s awkwardness was pretty adorable too. Flowers and chocolates…

The Flight Before Christmas

Stephanie is excited to take the next step in her relationship and move in with her boyfriend, but is then crushed when he drops the bombshell that he wants to break up. Faced with spending the holidays heartbroken and homeless, she decides to fly home to Connecticut. On a red-eye the day before Christmas, Stephanie finds herself seated next to Michael, who is planning to propose to his college girlfriend. The two get off to a rocky start but things get even worse when the pilot announces that a huge, unexpected snowstorm is crossing the country. Their flight is diverted to a small town in Montana where Stephanie snags the last available room at the town’s bed and breakfast. Despite their differences, she offers to share the room with Michael and try their best to get along.

Our Two Cents:
First, we have to say love the casting of Mayim Bialik. She's not the typical leading lady, i.e. she's not a supermodel. She gets an unfair wrap in the Hollywood scene about being "unattractive". Truth be told this causes a little blood boiling because she's not unattractive, she is just an ordinary looking girl and there's nothing wrong with that. But that isn't the thing that we love about her casting. It's that it wasn't part of the story. She wasn't cast to play the unattractive girl that the hot guy gets to know and realizes there's a heart of gold inside. Her looks weren't an issue--as they shouldn't be. So this movie gets props for that.

When first writing this review, we were thinking the ending fell a little flat but in after writing, we thought, we haven't actually watched this in a while. After watching it again, we'll say that the ending is cute and understated in a good way. Two thumbs up.

The Christmas Gift

When ten-year-old Megan receives a Secret Santa gift, she is touched by its contents which end up having a huge impact on her life. Now a driven young journalist, Megan can’t shake her desire to thank the person who sent her that heartfelt gift over a decade ago. Determined to prove herself to her editor, she goes on the search for the perfect Christmas story, and in doing so, she finally discovers who her Secret Santa is. Inspired by a true story.

Our Two Cents:
We wanted to like this one. The premise sounded cute, the commercial looked good, but sadly we just found it a bit boring. Zzzzz. We might have “rested our eyes” a bit in the middle, and weren't really invested enough to go back and watch what we missed.

A Gift Wrapped Christmas

Personal shopper Gwen's newest client, Charlie, is a high-rolling, workaholic, single father. When Gwen meets his 8-year-old son, Owen, during a package drop, she is saddened to see just how little time Charlie spends with him. Determined to get Charlie to appreciate his family, Gwen makes it her Christmas mission to get him into the festive spirit. As she gets closer to Charlie and Owen, she also discovers what she wants for the holidays.

Our Two Cents:
We watched this the next day after the disappointment of 12 Gifts of Christmas. The plot summary sounded basically the same. Instantly we could tell it was FAR better than the other one. The movie was more funny, the leads had far more personality and were likable. It’s really the little things that the actors to do to either create a cardboard reading of a dull script, or a real person that you want to be friends with. We definitely wanted to be friends with Gwen.

The Santa Con

Small-time con man Nick DeMarco (Barry Watson) is ordered by his parole officer to take a minimum-wage job as a department store Santa during the holidays...and he hates it. Near the end of his first shift, he hastily promises a young boy, Billy (Tucker Meeks), that Santa will bring his estranged parents back together by Christmas. When his sister Rosemary (Melissa Joan Hart) hears this, she is livid and can't believe he would break a little boy's heart with an empty promise. After a long night of soul searching--and with the help of an insightful female pastor (Wendy Williams)--Nick decides to make good on his promise to the child, somehow.

Our Two Cents:
This movie surprised us. We actually found ourselves not quite sure how the movie was going to end, and for these TV movies, that is rare. Usually, with in the first 15 minutes, you can make a pretty accurate guess on the plot of the entire movie. But as a whole, we enjoyed this one, especially the little nod to Ocean's Eleven (in which Barry Watson played himself) in the opening scenes.

Side Note: Hate that this is the only poster for the movie--featuring minor supporting cast rather than main characters.

Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever

In "Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever," Grumpy Cat is a lonely cat living in a mall pet shop. Because she always gets passed over and never gets chosen by customers, this kitty develops a sour outlook on life until…one day during the holidays, a very special 12-year-old girl named Chyrstal enters the pet store and falls in love with Grumpy Cat. A unique friendship is formed between the two when Chyrstal finds she is the only person who can hear this unique feline talk. In the middle of the holiday rush, Grumpy reluctantly thwarts the kidnapping of an expensive exotic dog she can’t stand and rescues Chyrstal after the mall closes on Christmas Eve. Will Grumpy Cat learn the true meaning of Christmas, or will it be in Grumpy’s words, “Worst. Christmas. Ever?”

Our Two Cents:
We've been clear about our feelings about pet movies. If there is a pet reference in the title, we tend to avoid, avoid, avoid (especially when of the feline variety). But, the Grumpy Cat memes, with their dry acerbic wit, can't help but win us over. So when we saw that they were making a Grumpy Cat movie... we had to check it out. Our expectations were low, which is key to enjoying movies like this. Aubrey Plaza was delightful!--in a grumpy "leave me alone" kind of way, of course. And we really developed a soft spot for Chrystal too. The plot was a bit far fetched, but really, who cares!

Wishin' and Hopin'

Based on the New York Times best-selling novel by award winning author Wally Lamb. A vivid slice of 1960s life, Wishin' and Hopin' is a wise-and-witty holiday tale that celebrates where we've been-and how far we've come. In the small town of Three Rivers, Connecticut, we go straight into the halls of St. Aloysius Gonzaga Parochial School with Felix Funicello, a Catholic school fifth-grader in 1964, whose claim to fame is his cousin Annette Funicello, the famous Mouseketeer and teen movie queen. But grammar and arithmetic move to the back burner this holiday season with the sudden arrivals of substitute teacher Madame Frechette and feisty Russian student Zhenya Kabakova. While Felix learns the meaning of French kissing, cultural misunderstanding, and tableaux vivants, Wishin' and Hopin' barrels toward one outrageous Christmas!

Our Two Cents:
This movie is very reminicient of The Wonder Years and A Christmas Story. Being about 10-11 year old boys, who are begining to think about girls and get a little pervy, it has a just a few non-family friendly moments, but, as much as we love the romantic Christmas comedies, this story of little Felix was a refreshing change. Being about an Italian family didn't hurt it at all either! Definitely put this on your watch list.

Christmas on the Bayou

Emotionally scarred by a failed marriage, Katherine has plunged into her successful career as a NYC marketing executive, but her workaholic ways are taking a toll on her 8 year old son, Zack. Concerned over Zack's increasing disaffection, Katherine decides they will spend Christmas in her home town in Louisiana's bayou country, where her mother, Lilly, is soon match-making with a vengeance. When Caleb, Katherine's old admirer, tries to rekindle a childhood romance and convince her to move home, Katherine is torn between the bright lights of the big city and the quiet, gentler rhythms of her Southern roots. But a small Christmas miracle, orchestrated by the mysterious Papa Noel, convinces Katherine that her heart belongs back in the bayou where she was raised.
(Summary from Lifetime)

Our Two Cents:
Many of these movies have a major motion picture counterpart, and this one is a holiday Hope Floats. This movie (and Tyler Hilton) will win you over with it's southern charm and you might just start considering making a trip to the bayou yourself.

Dear Secret Santa

After getting news of her father's bad fall, Jennifer, moves back to the house where she grew up, reuniting her with old flames and old memories. One day, Jennifer gets a Christmas card from a secret admirer in her mailbox and becomes curious as to who sent it. The admirer knows so many personal things about her that she decides to write back. Can she solve the mystery of who is sending her the Christmas cards?

Our Two Cents:
With a good cast, some cute moments and some good music, this movie is a little reminiscent of The Lake House, but it’s not quite the same story line. It has a few twists. Can you figure out who her Secret Santa is?

Side Note: Ok, so the mystery isn't that hard to figure out. Most plot summaries give it away. So if you want to be surprised, maybe don't follow the links or watch the trailer.

All About Christmas Eve

After pulling off a risky but fabulous party, party-planner Evelyn Wright (Haylie Duff) celebrates at her best friend's New York City bar and club. A friendly conversation with a handsome stranger (Chris Carmack) leads her down a path that will change her life.
As a reward for her job well done, she is awarded a big last minute client--none other than last night's handsome stranger. Unfortunately this new client's party is scheduled for Christmas Eve in Los Angeles, meaning Eve will have to cancel her holiday plans with her boyfriend Darren (Stephen Colletti).

The morning of her trip, Eve misses her alarm and has to rush to LaGuardia Airport in order to make her flight. The movie splits showing two story lines, one where Eve makes her flight to Los Angeles, and the other where she misses it.

As her two stories go into very different directions, will we find that if some thing is meant to be, it will find a way to be?

Our Two Cents:
There are many movies that while watching them, Marisa and I feel like if the writers had just consulted us, the movie could have been really good, rather than just ok. This is one of those movies. A holiday version of Sliding Doors? So much potential! This movie didn't quite live up to it, but you know we'll watch it every year anyway!

Every Christmas Eve, Sam's parents and Kat's widowed father gather with other employees and their families at Elissa Beth's house for their annual Christmas Eve dinner and every year Sam and Kat sit at the children's table. After a five-year absence, Sam realizes that Kat is the one...but he's afraid that the past will get in the way.

Our Two Cents:

The March Sisters at Christmas

A modern retelling of Louisa Mae Alcott’s Little Women. Sisters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy March are shocked to learn that their mother is planning to sell their family home, Orchard House after she returns with their father who was injured in Afghanistan where he was working as a war correspondent.
Resolute to find a way to keep their house, Jo talks her sisters into helping her to do the necessary repairs themselves. She figures if they can repair it in time, the family can afford to stay under the same roof.
On top of that, the celebrity that Jo ghost tweets for offers her a big opportunity–ghost writing her biography! As the sisters work to fix the house on a limited income, manage the holidays on their own, and work on their projects and work assignments, they find they may have bitten off more than they can chew and tempers begin to run high.
Meanwhile family friends Teddy Lawrence and John Brooke, who each harbor feelings for Jo and Meg respectively, are challenged by Mr. Lawrence to woo their ladyloves and get a genuine kiss by Christmas. Jo, however, begins to have her eye on Max Baer, her editor, and the teasing between Amy and Teddy may becoming more than just casual flirtation.
What should be a house full of Christmas cheer has become a hostile home front, and as the tension in the house reaches a breaking point, the sisters have a falling out. Now, with the house unfinished and their romantic lives unresolved, can the March Sisters come together to save the house–and their family–before Christmas is ruined?

Our Two Cents:
We are of two minds on this one: I like this one, Marisa kind of likes it. It says fairly true to the basic framework of Little Women, it has to take some liberties to modernize the story. I don't love the direction they took with Amy, they made her a little too trampy (for lack of a better word), which makes it a little hard to root for her with Teddy. Beth's character also doesn't make as much sense in this retelling and I think they could have done a little better with it. But overall, I think it's pretty cute and has some pretty witty dialogue.

Holiday High School Reunion

Twenty-eight-year-old Georgia is convinced the man of her dreams is the one "that got away" back in high school. Though she's tried dating other men, they just never seem to compare to her high school flame. When Georgia learns of her high school reunion a week before Christmas, she's ecstatic to finally have her chance to win Craig back. But as she gets to relive high school for a night, she begins to realize it might not be Craig at all who got away, but Ben, an old friend with whom she'd fallen out of touch.

Our Two Cents:
This was not good. Georgia was just kind of obnoxious and clueless. NO ONE seems to have grown up at all in the 10 years since high school. They are all single. They are all silly and immature—even Georgia, which is what makes it hardest to like her.

The script just didn’t make a lot of sense. She is supposed to be hung up on her old flame, and while there are plenty (too many) scenes where stares dreamily across the room at him while he doofs around and looks confused, she doesn’t actually do much talking to him. He doesn't even remember her at first. Meanwhile, she repeatedly sneaks away to goof off with her old best friend. In fact, it sounds like that's how it was in high school too—stare dreamily at Craig, hang out with Ben. She just doesn't try very hard to get him back. Mostly she just spends the evening embarrassing herself. Like we said, the script just doesn't make any sense.

But you never know. It may end up being one of your guilty pleasures, so maybe try it out! We have plenty that we watch that we fully realize are awful.

A Christmas Proposal

Two estranged high school sweethearts, Rick and Lisa find each other at odds, when Ricks returns to his hometown to present an opportunity to turn their quaint little town into a bustling ski resort. Lisa, along with Rick's mother, childhood best friend and the townsfolk, aren't too keen on the idea. A lot is riding on this ski lodge for Rick. Not only for his career, but his boss also happens to be the father of Reagan, his girlfriend and coworker, and Rick wants his blessing to propose to her.
The ski lodge isn't the only idea that Rick's friends and family aren't warming to. No one seems to like Reagan either and they can see that there is still something there between Rick and Lisa. That's when the devious plots begin to keep Rick in town and away from Reagan.
Will the time around each other remind Rick of what he had with Lisa all those years ago? And will Rick remember his small town roots and help thwart the ski lodge plans?

Our Two Cents:
This movie is a couple of common Christmas plots all rolled into one movie. The story is a bit ridiculous--you might find yourself expressing cynical comments aloud as the movie progresses. There are several moments that you can tell they didn't quite know how to get from plot point A to plot point B so they just fill it with nonsense and hope you don't notice. We notice. There's a knock-off McDreamy, and (maybe this next one shouldn't matter but it does) the wardrobes in this movie are hideous. I mean, it's really bad--Lisa's most of all. Despite this, for some unknown reason, we like it. We can't explain it.

As the two plot, Roxanne begins see that she misjudged Jack and the two truly love one another. Is it too late to fix her schemes and pull together the ultimate Christmas wedding for Rose and Jack?

Our Two Cents:
This movie doesn't have much to do with Christmas except for that it happens to take place during the holidays. It's is a little bit different than most, but at the same time, is just as predictable as you hope it to be. Enjoy!

Holiday Switch

A week before Christmas, Paula Ferguson finds herself struggling with bills and life with her blue-collar husband Gary and her two daughters. When her high school boyfriend Nick Kensington returns to town, Paula wonders if she made the wrong decision when she chose her date to the prom. What would her life have been like if she stayed with Nick?

One night, while everyone else is asleep, wondering if she made the wrong choices in life, she is in the basement and bumps her head. When she comes to, she hears a strange voice calling from inside the dryer. Looking inside, she can see an opening in the back and she crawls through. On the other side is the laundry room in a luxurious mansion and a maid calling her Mrs. K. Even her clothes have changed from worn flannel pajamas and a terry cloth robe to silk and lace. It turns out she is Mrs. K, Mrs. Kensington, that is!

As she becomes more acquainted with what life would really be as the wealthy Mrs. K, without her real husband Gary and without her two girls, she wonders if she should have, as they say, been careful what she wished for. She soon realizes despite their financial problems, she had a really great husband and great life as Paula Ferguson. Is it too late to take back her wish?

Our Two Cents:
This isn't the greatest movie, but we like it anyway. It's another one of those, what would life had been like if scenarios. I enjoyed watching her journey from loving her new pretend life to realizing all the great things she really had. Great message that things don't have to be perfect to be wonderful.

His & Her Christmas

Tom Lane is the star columnist for the media conglomerate owned San Francisco Sun newspaper. The company is thinking about increasing Tom's exposure by producing a new television show around him. Liz Madison is the advice columnist for the little read community newspaper, the Marin County Voice, which is a throwback to gentler times. Besides their journalistic occupations, one other similar aspect between Tom and Liz is that they are both currently single, with their friends and family doing whatever they can to find that special someone for their personal life. On November 2, the staff at the Voice learn that the Sun ownership has bought their newspaper, with the probable goal of folding it into the operations of the Sun. If this move does happen, the staff at the Voice will lose their jobs.

To fight back, Liz decides to change her column to an editorial espousing the meaning of Christmas and the newspaper to the community. Because of the feisty and entertaining stance of Liz's new column, the circulation of the Voice increases so much so that the owner has second thoughts about folding it, which in turn would put Tom's new television show in jeopardy. To protect his career advancement, Tom decides to write a counterpoint column to Liz's, his about instilling some practicality into Christmas. The competing columns become a personal battle for the two columnists. But as Tom and Liz spew their mutual loathing for each other, their respective friends try to convince them of the old adage that there is a fine line between love and hate.

Our Two Cents:
We used to really like this one. But Christmas movies have gotten so very very very much better since 2005 and in watching it recently, it sadly paled in comparison to the newer better movies.
